You’re excited to study in the United States, but how do you obtain a student visa? What is required to legally enter and study in the USA? Relax. And it all starts with the I-20. You probably have a few questions about this pesky form. We are here to tell you everything you need to know.

What Is The I-20?

The I-20 is a document issued by a U.S. government-approved educational institution such as ELC.  This document states that a student has been admitted to a full-time study program in the USA and has sufficient financial resources to stay in the United States. The I-20 is a necessary document for a person to apply for an F-1 student visa.  This is important because a student visa is required for international students to be able to legally begin a course of study in the United States.

What Are The Steps To Acquiring An I-20?

  1. i-20Apply to the school you wish to attend. For example, once you apply to ELC, we will issue an I-20 in your name and will mail it to you in your home country.
  2. After receiving your I-20 from an approved school, such as ELC, you are now able to apply for an F-1/ Student Visa at the U.S. embassy in your home country.
  3. Once you acquire your Student Visa, you must present both the Student Visa and the I-20 form upon arrival to the United States.
  4. Once you enter into the country, you will use your I-20 as identification and proof of your legal and academic status. For example, I-20s are often required at the Social Security Office and the Department of Motor Vehicles.
