What it Means to be a Homestay Family
Imagine what it would feel like to travel overseas to an unfamiliar country with a language and culture completely different from what you know. You are far away from family and friends, and you must re-learn everything from how to mail a letter to where to buy food.

While fun and exciting, living in another country can be terrifying as well! As a homestay family, you have a unique opportunity to offer a student the guidance and support crucial for a positive and fulfilling cultural experience. Within the caring environment of the home, a family fulfills the role of language coach, cultural facilitator, supporter, and friend as their student adjusts to life in the United States. Students who live in homestays typically improve their language skills faster and adjust to American culture more easily.

The Role of a Homestay Family
In addition to guiding students as they adjust to a new culture and way of life, homestay families also provide the following:

• Meals
• Transportation to and from class
• Private or semi-private room
• Utilities, with the exception of long-distance phone calls
• An English-speaking environment
• The option to participate in family activities

There are Many Benefits to Becoming a Homestay Family
• Learn about another country’s customs and traditions
• Spend time exploring your own state and country
• Learn another language for interest or future travel
• Socialize with other host families
• Develop lasting relationships with the student and their overseas family
• Share your family’s traditions while enriching the life of a student
• Open doors to future international opportunities

Families are also paid a monthly room/board fee by students.
• $600/month for families who are able to provide meals and transportation
• $300/month for families who are not able to provide meals and transportation
